FAQs
What are Lumens?
Lumens (LM) are a measure of the visible light produced by a light source. The higher the lumen rating, the brighter it will be. Lumens are a good way to compare LED light output with other light sources.
If I have an existing cut out, will an LED fitting fit?
The answer is yes! As LED lighting is often used to retrofit existing lighting, many shapes and sizes have been made to ensure there is one to suit your needs. Several Cerian downlights have options that make it possible to put a 90mm cut-out downlight into larger holes.
Are LED lights dimmable?
Yes, however their ability to do so is dependent on the driver that the individual fitting uses. Cerian Lighting includes dimmable drivers with most of their downlights, but it is not a standard inclusion on all products.
What is Lux level?
Lux level refers to the intensity of light in a specific space. It is a measure of lumens/m². For example, ideal lux levels are 240 lux for food preparation.
Can a downlight safely operate if it touches insulation?
Only if it has been classified with a CA, IC, or IC-F rating. CA classifications allow insulation to side about the downlight and IC allows it to cover the downlight.
Why are LED wattages so much lower than other comparable light sources?
LED lights operate by converting energy straight to light, whereas traditional light sources convert energy to heat to produce light, which means LEDs use less watts to produce the same light output. It also means that they are not particularly hot to touch.
What is an IP rating?
IP stands for ‘ingress protection’ which refers to what the fitting can keep out. The first digit rates the product’s ability to prevent entry of things such as insects or dust with six being dust tight. The second digit rates water resistance on a scale of 1 – 8, with eight allowing continuous immersion. As a general guide, IP44 is for general indoor use, IP54 for protected outdoor locations and IP65 can take being out in the rain.
What is CRI?
Colour Rendering Index measures the ability of a light source to faithfully reproduce the colour of various objects. The closer it is to 100, the higher the quality of the light source.
How long do they last?
LED light fittings should last for at least 30,000 hours. So, if you used your lights eight hours a day, seven days a week, they should last for 10 years. All Cerian products are expected to last for 50,000 hours.
What happens when they stop working?
LED lights have longer lifespans than traditional sources, but when they do fail, you will need to replace the entire fitting unless it is a unit that has a replaceable lamp. Early failures are likely to be covered by warranty conditions.
